The Lord's Prayer is the prayer that Jesus taught his disciples, when they asked him how they should pray.

Almost Christians know the prayer by heart in their own language, and it is used today by every Christian tradition, though there are sometimes pocket-sized variations in the diction. It has a identify in every Anglican act of worship, and forms a blueprint for prayer for Christians:

  • We anoint God and pray for our globe, our communities and our lives to exist shaped past God's will;
  • We pray for daily needs to be met,
  • For forgiveness for wrongdoings, strength to resist temptation and protection from danger.

At that place are two versions commonly used in the Church of England – in Contemporary and Traditional Language:

Contemporary

Our Father in sky,
hallowed exist your name,
your kingdom come,
your will exist done,
on earth every bit in sky.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as nosotros forgive those who sin confronting the states.
Lead united states not into temptation
but deliver united states of america from evil.
For the kingdom, the power,
and the glory are yours
at present and for ever.
Amen.

Traditional

Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy proper noun;
thy kingdom come;
thy will be done;
on earth as information technology is in sky.
Give us this solar day our daily staff of life.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us non into temptation;
only deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
the ability and the glory,
for ever and ever.
Amen.

Origins

The text is found in two slightly different versions in the New Testament – Matthew six.9–xiii and Luke xi.i–4

The passage from Luke

The prayer as nosotros use information technology today is a version that was adapted by the early Christian communities from the ii Gospel texts, and it was taught in this form to new converts.

The final sentence, giving glory to God, is chosen the doxology. Information technology is non function of the New Testament text, simply was added very early on. The Lord'southward Prayer is occasionally said without it.

God is outgoing. Prayer is something anyone can do. You don't accept to apply complicated words or flowery language. God isn't swayed by arguments or by length or by skill in prayer.

At the eye of our prayers volition be words that Jesus himself taught us. Information technology is simple enough to be memorised past small children and all the same profound plenty to sustain a whole lifetime of prayer.
